Celebrating the New David J Craig Narthex and Sanctuary

david-craigApproximately ten months ago, long-time member David Craig surprised the board and congregation with the news that he and his wife Shirley, along with three other (then) anonymous donors pledged a substantial amount to fund a new sanctuary and narthex.

On Friday, March 18, 2016, The Treasure Coast Unitarian Universalist Congregation held a ground breaking ceremony for a new addition that includes a large sanctuary, narthex, and storage room.
The contractor for the new building was Ronnie Kirchman of Kirchman Construction, a well-known contractor in the Stuart area with offices on Delmar Street just off Dixie Highway. The architect was Gary Kelly of Kelly & Kelly Architects.

The completion of the new building is on schedule: November of 2016.

img_0165The new building adds a full 4410 sq. ft. with most of that area devoted to a sanctuary that accommodates up to 234 persons. The old sanctuary space will serve as a Social Center with a commercial kitchen, a small meeting room, and offices for both the minister and church secretary. All spaces are ADA compliant and most areas will be available for rental for special events.

The money for the new addition was donated by four major donors: David and Shirley Craig, Joan and Jim Henderson, Vince and Enid Johnson, and Vince and Phyllis Hall.

A building project team assembled to oversee the building process. The goals of this team were to:

  • Oversee the building process and assure that the new wing is finished according to donor plans and in a 6-month time frame.
  • Celebrate events such as the groundbreaking, ribbon cutting, and naming ceremony to maximize our exposure in the community, help revitalize congregational life, and THINK BIG!
  • Unify the purposes of our new sanctuary and existing fellowship hall so that we expand membership dedicated to UU principles, community–focused social justice, and spiritual growth.
  • Provide a campus and ministry that can host multiple organizations for money-raising events.

unnamedThe members of this team worked hard to see the project to its completion. A special thanks is owed to its members in addition to the donors whose gift made it possible.
